The Return of the Cash Cow

It is nearly 40 years since BCG described the constituents of a company's product portfolio and introduced the concept of the cash cow—the competitively advantaged lower-growth businesses with a large cash-generation capability. In what Alan Greenspan called 'the period of euphoria' these businesses—and the concept—went out of fashion. Now, however, in this era of uncertainty, the cash cow is being—or should be—restored to its former prominence.
