Youth violence is a major issue in Chicago. When we started working with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) in June 2009, more than 500 students had been shot and more than 50 students had been killed over the past two school years. Our team developed a comprehensive action plan to address the problem, including a risk model that identifies each student's likelihood of being shot. The model revealed that 200 students were statistically about 50 times more likely to become victims of gun violence than the average student.

This knowledge enabled CPS to prioritize and reach out to these students with personalized interventions. Early results have been very encouraging: both shootings and homicides were down 16 percent last year. I'm incredibly proud of the impact we've made by applying our commercial tool kit to a very important social problem.

BCG's commitment to social impact was one of the main draws for me when considering post-undergraduate options. I've always been passionate about organizations with social missions, but having spent significant time in the nonprofit and public sectors before joining BCG, I was acutely aware of the need for more "business-minded" people in social impact roles.

Thus, from the beginning of my time at BCG, I took advantage of the amazing opportunities to develop that critical "business mind" in hopes of later applying it in social impact settings. And when an opportunity came up, I jumped on it!

My work on a global transformation project as a secondee with Save the Children has been one of my best experiences to date. It has not been easy by any means, but it has been personally fulfilling and a great learning experience.

Before joining BCG, Awara worked at Global Goods Partners, a fair-trade nonprofit supporting women-led development initiatives around the world.

She has also worked for a microfinance organization in Santiago, Chile, and served as the executive board president of Harvard Model Congress Europe, a government-simulation conference for international high school students.

Awara graduated from Harvard College with a BA in government and a Spanish language citation.

After working internationally in investment banking I joined BCG in Hungary to have an impact on the Hungarian market. I opted for BCG because of the open working culture, the intellectual quality of the employees, and its diverse atmosphere, all of which are reflected in the projects and learning opportunities at BCG.

Since I joined I have created, for example, a segment strategy for a leading Hungarian bank, as well as in the energy telco and health services sectors.

Beyond serving clients, I am proud that BCG is committed to making a positive impact on society. We have a rich history of helping social impact organizations achieve their goals, and the Budapest office is one of the core members of BCG's Social Impact initiatives. We recently managed to develop a concept of an urban water research institute.

Prior to joining BCG, Tibor worked at Morgan Stanley in Budapest as a Structuring Team Leader.

He graduated from Corvinus University of Budapest with a degree in Investment and Risk Analysis.

Most of the work we do at BCG is in the client sector, but for me, some of the most deeply satisfying projects have been those that involve social impact causes. Whether it has been with the World Food Programme, various NGOs, or the Rockefeller Foundation, the work I’ve done at BCG has had a lasting effect on me and the organizations I’ve helped.

One of my responsibilities at BCG is to manage the Social Impact Practice Network together with a very committed team. We bring the same professionalism and rigor to our social-impact work that we commit to our commercial case work. Because the Social Impact Practice is closely linked to all of BCG’s practices, we can draw from the firm’s broad expertise. At the same time we constantly strive to extend our “domain expertise” by developing new strategies and concepts for the social sector.

Before joining BCG, Ulrich completed several internships in the industrial and service sector and worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Karlsruhe.

Ulrich holds a master's degree in economics and industrial engineering, and he has studied at the University of Karlsruhe, the University of Ottawa, and the Institut d'tudes Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris.
